According to Statistics Estonia, the industrial production in January 2008 increased compared to December as well as compared to January of the previous year.
In January 2008, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of Estonia rose 4% compared to December.
In comparison with January of the previous year, the industrial production increased 4%, in manufacturing 2%. Rapid growth continued in energy production and mining. In January 2008, compared to January of the previous year, the production of electricity increased 20%, the production of heat remained on the same level. Growth in the production of energy was mainly caused by the exports via Estlink’s submarine cable.
There was a small growth in manufacturing in January. The growth was mainly influenced by the increase in the production of metal products, chemicals and electrical machinery. The share of exports in the manufacturing of chemicals and electrical machinery is about 80%. Production grew in all branches of machinery and apparatus manufacturing, mainly due to the increase in exports. In January, there was a growth also in the manufacture of textiles, because of the increase in the production of sewn textile articles, while the production of yarn and fabric continues to decrease.
The decrease was observed in all branches of food production except the production of meat products. In the manufacturing of food, which is the leader in price increase, the prices rose 20% during the year, in the manufacturing of milk products the increase was more than 40%, in the manufacturing of grain mill products — more than 60%. The production of building materials fell 19% in connection with a slowdown in construction. The downward trend continues in the manufacturing of wood, the production of plastic products also decreased.
