The number of tourists in accommodation establishments increases slowly

In April 162,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments of Estonia, more than a half was foreign tourists. Compared to March, the total number of tourists in accommodation establishments increased, but compared to April of the previous year it decreased.

The coming tourism season is bringing into Estonia customarily more foreign tourists who use accommodation services. During the recent years in April about 40% more foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments than in March. In 2008 the increase was about a half smaller. In April about 12,000 foreign tourists less stayed in accommodation establishments compared to the same month of the previous year. The number of tourists from all our main partner states decreased: from Finland (15%), from Sweden (9%), from Latvia (7%), from Norway (25%) and from the United Kingdom (6%). The number of tourists from Germany stayed on the same level as in April a year ago and the number of tourists from Russia increased 5%. In April 61% of foreign tourists were on a holiday and 27% were on a business trip. Compared to April of the previous year, more foreign tourists were on a business trip and less foreign tourists were on a holiday.

In April 708 accommodation establishments with 16,500 rooms and 35,300 beds were available for tourists. The room occupancy rate was 39%. The average cost of a guest night in an accommodation establishment was 524 kroons. The average cost of a guest night increased by 6% compared to April 2007. The average cost of a guest night in hotels and motels was 578 kroons and in other types of accommodation establishments — 280 kroons. The cost of a guest night was the highest in Tallinn — 656 kroons.
