According to Statistics Estonia, by preliminary estimation the number of population in Estonia on 1 January 2008 was 1,340,600. Due to the increase in the number of births the decrease in population number slowed down last year.
In 2007, the difference between the number of registered deaths and births was about 1,800 and the population number decreased 0.13% due to the natural increase (0.2% in 2006). The natural increase remained negative or the number of deaths still exceeded the number of births.
At the same time, 864 births more were registered in 2007 compared to 2006. 15,741 live births were registered at registry offices last year. The number of deaths was 17,548 and their number increased by 232 compared to the previous year. The number of stillbirths and infant deaths also increased. 7,057 marriages were contracted, which is by about 100 marriages more compared to the previous year. The number of divorces was 3,810 and their number remained on the level of the previous year.
Births, deaths and natural increase, 2000–2007

The number of population published by Statistics Estonia is based on the 2000 Population and Housing Census data and is complemented by the annual data on registered births and deaths. Since 2000 the migration data were not used in the estimation of the population because of their low quality.
The population number will be adjusted on the basis of annual processing of vital events and will be released in the database on 22 April.
