Statistics Estonia put the population statistics on the World Map

Customers have an opportunity to explore the Estonian population statistics on the Internet based mapping application Google Earth. The number of population, proportion of children, working-age and elderly people on city or rural municipality level, as well as the relation of dependant people to working-age persons can be viewed. The data are presented as of 1 January 2008.

“We hope that exploring the population statistics with the Google Erath mapping application will increase the general knowledge about Estonia and rise the awareness of location based statistics”, said the Leading Specialist Diana Makarenko-Piirsalu. “We plan to widen the list of population indicators during the year and add thematic maps about Estonia to Google Earth”.

With regard to the development made in the framework of the Year of Innovation we have to deal with innovative and inspiring idea, said Urmas Kõiv, the project manager of the Year of Innovation. “The given project is a good example how to make essential statistical information easily accessible,” said Kõiv.

The mapping application Google Earth should be installed in user’s computer prior viewing the statistics. The software can be downloaded free of charge from http://earth.google.com/.

To explore the population statistics on Google Earth the user should download and open the specific KML file http://www.stat.ee/public/kaardid/google-earth/Rahvastikustatistika-Google-Earthis.kml. The persons interested in service can view a more detailed instruction on the website of Statistics Estonia http://www.stat.ee/32707.

The service is currently in Estonian and will be made available in English in Google Earth soon.
