The conference of the Estonian Statistical Society focuses on registers and Population Census

On 24–25 March the conference of the Estonian Statistical Society “Registers and the Population Census” will take place in Tallinn. One of the organisers of the conference is Statistics Estonia.

The Population and Housing Census will be conducted in Estonia in 2011 (REL 2011) and in relation to the Census the development of registers has started. Is it possible to organise a register-based Census in Estonia? When and on what conditions? “The aim of the conference is to inspire discussion about the trends of official registers and the methods of the present day Population Census,” remarked Diana Beltadze, the Project Manager of the 2011 Population Census of Statistics Estonia.

“The conference will concentrate on top competence of the Population Census and registers in Estonia”, mentions Kalev Pärna, the President of the Estonian Statistical Society. “During two days we discuss the correlation between the development of the information system of the country and the Population Census”.

The conference will be opened by Ene Ergma, the President of the Riigikogu, Urve Palo, the Minister of Population and Tea Varrak, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Finance. The representatives of ministries and agencies will provide an overview of the expectations of the state with regard to the Population Census. Together with the scientists of the universities and specialists of the Population Census the possibilities to use the official registers in the 2011 Population Census will be discussed. A good overview will be given about the current situation of the information systems of the country in the subject areas concerning all of us, such as population, education and public health. Retrospect to the first Population Census in Estonia and Livonia in 1881 is also interesting.

The programme is available on the website of Statistics Estonia http://www.stat.ee/yritused
The conference will take place in the training centre of the Ministry of Finance (Tallinn, 1 Suur-Ameerika Str).
