Population and Housing Census in 2011

In 2011, the Population and Housing Census will be conducted for the eleventh time in Estonia. All permanent residents and all dwellings in Estonia will be enumerated during the census. The census is the only survey that provides comprehensive statistics on the number of inhabitants in Estonia and on the distribution, living conditions and characteristics of the population. This information is essential for planning Estonia’s future.

The population census lasts for three months and is conducted in two stages:

  • Those who did not participate in the e-census for some reason will be visited by enumerators in the period of 16 February to 31 March 2012. More information about the interview census is available HERE.
  • From 31 December 2011 to 1 February 2012 people could participate in the Population Census also online. During the first month over 815,000 persons enumerated themselves (62% of the estimated population of Estonia).

To ensure the success of this major event, which concerns everyone in Estonia, it is absolutely crucial for every permanent resident of Estonia to participate in the census. This is the only way to gain the information that helps us make the best use of our resources and set the right goals as a society for the next ten years.
