Programme
EFGS 2010 seminar will be hosted by Statistics Estonia. The programme Committee is EFGS Steering Committee. Detailed information on GEOSTAT project and EFGS can be obtained from the website of the European forum for Geostatistics (www.efgs.info). EFGS 2010 Conference will focus on linking Census 2010/11 round results with spatial grids and share the work on GEOSTAT ESSNet project "Representing Census data in a European population grid”. Integrating statistical variables into one harmonized discrete gridded dataset is a challenge. Harmonized gridded population datasets should serve as a foundation for multipurpose spatial analysis in cross border situations and at the same time support any policy or decision making process in sustainable development, environmental or infrastructure planning or business in many economic sectors. A harmonized gridded dataset, showing the spatial distribution of the European population on km grids, promises to be an invaluable foundation and model for the type of integrated statistical datasets required for interdisciplinary spatial analysis. The sound concept for dissemination of European gridded statistical dataset is needed. Moreover, the emerging needs for availability of gridded population dataset not only at the European level but also in the global level needs the action from geo-statisticians around the Globe. We need new GIS technologies, paradigms and concepts to meet these demands. Conference will seek to find answers for these challenges and provoke the discussion among national statistics institutions, academia and other users. It is our hope, that concentration of geo-statisticians, researches and users in Tallinn will discuss the Global initiative for high- quality, state of the art gridded population dataset being usual and integral part of society’s everyday infrastructure. Tallinn Old Town is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and is often referred to as the “medieval pearl of Europe“. Tallinn has managed to preserve the completeness and structure of its medieval and Hanseatic origin. Most of the cobblestone streets and properties, important state and church buildings, citizens’ and merchants’ residences, barns and warehouses dating back as far as to the 11th century, are preserved in their original form. During an hour guided walking tour you will feel the milieu of the most intact medieval city in Europe. * The entrance to the pre-registered Social Events can be purchased upon arrival and during the breaks at the conference reception desk. Only cash payments in EEK (Estonian kroons) prior to the event will be accepted. The places are reserved for pre-registered participants only. | 19.00 | Dinner “Get together” for all participants Concert: "A Musical Journey into Traditions", Siiri Sisask Siiri Sisask's performance promises to be very exciting. In her programme entitled "A Musical Journey into Traditions" she sings folk songs of various peoples in various different languages. Siiri Sisask is regarded as one of Estonia's most compelling singers whose voice, in its range and technique, has surprised audiences in Estonia and abroad. She has written many of her own songs and composed instrumental music. She has played a number of roles in films and theatre and has written fairy tales for children as well as poetry. She has taken part in exhibitions with her oil paintings and is also actively involved in handicrafts. She founded the charity "Saagu Valgus" (Let There Be Light), which has helped to eliminate the legacy of Soviet lighting at Estonian school grounds. Siiri Sisask has also procured musical instruments for schools with her special fund in order to create the best possible music-making opportunities for children living in Estonia. | Day 2 : Wednesday, 06.10.2010 | Session 1 | GEOSTAT WP 1: User needs, Chair: Mrs Ingrid Kaminger, Statistics Austria The main challenges in producing harmonised gridded population dataset are the differences in national geographic projections, grid coding systems, the data interoperability between statistics and spatial data, the different time spans of updating demographic data, data quality, confidentiality issues and others. One of the main goals of GEOSTAT project is to find a best solution for users from one hand and for gridded population data producers from other hand. Therefore, the session “User needs” main emphasis will be put on presenting the user perspectives on their needs and on analyse of user needs for providing technically sound data specification for a harmonised transnational grid, integrating population statistics variables across national borders in Europe. | 09:00 - 09:10 | Status report WP 1 ”User Needs”, Mrs Ingrid Kaminger, Statistics Austria | 09:10 - 09:30 | Analyse of geostatistics user needs, Mrs Ingrid Kaminger, Statistics Austria | 09:30 - 09:50 | Geospatial data in EEA assessments – status and requirements, Mr Andrus Meiner, European Environment Agency, Denmark | 09:50 - 10:10 | Nordic accessibility index, Mr Erik Fransson, The Swedish Agency for Growth Policy Analysis, Sweden | 10:10 - 10:30 | A new urban-rural typology, developed using grid data., Mr Hugo Poelman, European Commission, DG Regional Policy, REGIO-GIS, Belgium | 10.30 - 10.50 | EFGS as a Market Place , Mr Erik Sommer, EFGS Expert Group for Business Models, Denmark | 10.50 - 11.30 | Tea & Coffee Break | Session 2 | GEOSTAT WP 2: Geostatistics Chair: Mrs Marja Tammilehto-Luode, Statistics Finland The main objective of the Geostat project is to provide a system of small area statistics liberated from administrative areas that may be used for spatial analysis in cross border situations. We will do this using a system of discrete grids. Ideally this should be based on point information but will in practice, for most types of socio-cultural and economic data, be based on disaggregation techniques as well. Thus, there are three types of approaches that countries adopt. Aggregation (from smaller grids or points), Disaggregation (from administrative areas) or Hybrid method (a mixture of both). The main emphasise of this session is to assess the opportunities for integrating the results of the national censuses into one harmonised dataset using these different approaches. | 11:30 - 11:40 | Status report WP 2 ”Geostatistics”, Mrs Marja Tammilehto-Luode, Statistics Finland | 11:40 - 12:00 | Population and Housing Census GIS in Estonia, Mrs Diana Makarenko-Piirsalu, Statistics Estonia | 12:00 - 12:20 | Population and Housing Census GIS in Norway, Mr Vilni Verner Holst Bloch and Mr Bjørn Thorsdalen, Statistics Norway | 12:20 - 12:40 | Agricultural Census and GIS, Ms Geir Inge Gundersen, Statistics Norway | 12:40 - 13:00 | Construction of gridded population and poverty data sets from different data sources, Mr Alex de Sherbinin, NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center, CIESIN – The Earth Institute at Columbia University, USA | 13:00 - 14:00 | Lunch for all participants | Session 2 continues | | 14:00 - 14:20 | Geostatistics and disaggregating models, Mr Jean-Luc Lipatz, INSEE, France | 14:20 - 14:40 | Gridded Population – new data sets for an improved disaggregation approach, Dr. Kalus Steinnocher , AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, Mrs Ingrid Kaminger, Statistics Austria, M.
