In January a lot of tourists stayed in accommodation establishments

According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2011, 143,000 foreign and domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 16% more than a year earlier in the same month.

In January 88,000 foreign and 55,000 domestic tourists used the services of accommodation establishments or respectively 22% and 7% more, compared to January of the previous year. More tourists from neighbouring countries – Finland, Russia, Latvia, Sweden and Norway stayed in accommodation establishments, as well as from more distant countries. 79% of foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments of Tallinn, the services of which were used by about a fifth more foreign tourists than in January of the previous year. The number of accommodated tourists in Valga county increased by a third compared to January 2010 and it was mainly influenced by international winter sports events in Otepää.

39% of clients of accommodation establishments were domestic tourists. Nearly 4,000 domestic tourists more than in January 2010 used the services of accommodation establishments. A quarter of domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments of Harju county, 13% of Tartu county, 11% of Valga county and 11% of Pärnu county. 53% of domestic tourists were on a holiday trip and about a third on a business trip.

In January 739 accommodation establishments with 16,600 rooms and 36,100 beds were available for tourists. The room occupancy rate was 34%. The room occupancy rate was five percentage points higher than in January 2010.

The average cost of a guest night in an accommodation establishment was 27 euros and it was 4 euros more expensive compared to January 2010.
