More than half of the gross domestic product of Estonia is created in Harju county

In 2009, the GDP of Estonia at current prices was 13.8 billion Euros, of which the GDP of Harju county was 8.5 billion Euros. The share of Harju county in the GDP of Estonia increased by 1 percentage point compared to 2008 mainly due to the growth in the share of the electricity activity. Harju county was followed by Tartu and Ida-Viru counties whose share of the GDP of Estonia was 10% and 8%, respectively.

The economic activity of Estonia was mainly concentrated in three counties – Harju, Tartu and Ida-Viru counties. Those three counties together gave 83% of the value added of services and three quarters of value added of industry and construction. At the same time the shares of agriculture, forestry and fishing in those counties were the smallest.

The counties which contributed the least to the total GDP of Estonia, were Hiiu, Põlva, Jõgeva and Lääne, their total share of Estonia’s GDP accounted for 4%.

In 2009 about 3% of the value added was created in agriculture, forestry and fishing activity, 27% in industry and construction and 70% in services.

The services sector was the biggest in all counties. The share of services was the largest in Harju (76%) and Tartu (73%) counties, mainly due to the high indicators of Tallinn and Tartu cities. Compared to 2008, the percentage of services has risen in all counties.

The share of agriculture, forestry and fishing activity was the biggest in Hiiu (19%) and Jõgeva counties (18%). The biggest share of industry and construction was in Ida-Viru county (46%) which shows the important role of mining and electricity in this county’s economic activity.

In 2009, the GDP of Estonia per capita was 10,326 Euros. The respective indicator for Harju county was the only one above Estonia’s average, accounting for 156% of the average. Harju county was followed by Tartu and Pärnu counties, where the GDP per capita was 91% and 68% of Estonia’s average, respectively. In 2009, the GDP per capita was the smallest in Jõgeva, Valga and Põlva counties where it stayed below half of Estonia’s average.
