Leading geostatisticians of Europe are gathering in Tallinn

The Conference of European Forum for Geostatistics taking place in Tallinn from 5–7 October is focused on introducing new methods and technologies of producing geostatistics or gridded statistics. Geostatistics deals with spatial analysis of statistics.

“One of the objectives of the conference is to find contemporary possibilities for the creation of spatial grid map of population, which means that at least within Europe reliable and unified data on the geographical location of the population should be available with the preciseness of a square kilometre,” said Ms Diana Makarenko-Piirsalu, the organiser of the conference from Statistics Estonia. She added that the gridded spatial data are an essential help in planning transport, environmental, social, rescue service networks, but also the trade network. “Gridded statistics are the basis for planning and development of services connected with spatial grids in many fields of business,” added Ms Makarenko-Piirsalu.

The conference pays special attention to Census 2010/11 round results and production of gridded statistics on their basis.

Over fifty participants from 30 countries take part in the conference, incl. from reputable universities, research institutions (NASA), statistical offices, organisations of the Commission of the European Communities, as well as from the private sector. “The best geostatisticians of their speciality of Europe are participating in the conference,” noted Ms Makarenko-Piirsalu. In addition to European geostatisticians also scientists from the US and Brazil are making reports at the conference.

The Conference of European Forum for Geostatistics is conducted for the third time, this year the conference is organised by Statistics Estonia and the professional association European Forum for Geostatistics linking European geostatisticians.
