Statistics Estonia announces the competition for young statistician’s grant

In relation to the 90th anniversary, since 2011, Statistics Estonia starts to bestow the young statistician’s grant named after Albert Pullerits.

Albert Pullerits was the first leader of the Estonian State Central Bureau of Statistics established in 1921 and the founder of Estonian official statistics system. With founding the grant named after him, Statistics Estonia celebrates the 90th anniversary of Estonian statistics. “Let’s hope that the grant will motivate young people to engage in statistics and to develop this branch of science,” explained Mr Priit Potisepp, Director General of Statistics Estonia. “The grant is also a tribute to Albert Pullerits, the founder and developer of Estonian statistics, under whose leadership Estonia caught up with the progressive countries of statistics in Europe,” he added.

All students’ works that develop or use a statistical method are eligible to apply for the grant. Statistics Estonia is going to award the price every year and the subject area of works is determined separately for every year. The subject area for 2011 is Population and Social Statistics in connection with the Population and Housing Census starting at the end of the year.

The authors of Master’s, Bachelor’s, course- or diploma works who are not older than 25 in the year of applying are eligible to apply for the grant. Works completed in 2010 or 2011 can be submitted to the competition.

The deadline of submitting the works is 7 September 2011. Please send the works to Statistics Estonia at the address 15 Endla Str, 15174 Tallinn and at the e-mail address: statistika at stat dot ee, keyword “Albert Pulleritsu preemia”. The winner is announced on the website of Statistics Estonia on Statistics Day on 20 October 2011. The winner will be awarded the iPhone 4.
