Information leaflets on the census will be sent to every household

Starting today, 15 December, Statistics Estonia will send out information leaflets on the Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011) beginning on 31 December. The leaflets will be delivered to all mailboxes of private individuals in Estonia – with the help of Estonian Post, the leaflets will reach more than 650,000 mailboxes.

“It is absolutely crucial for every single inhabitant of Estonia to participate in the census, in order to provide the most accurate data for organising life in Estonia in the next ten years. For this reason, it is also important that all the necessary information about the census reaches every single home in Estonia,” said Mr Priit Potisepp, Director General of Statistics Estonia.

“This is such an important event for the country, and the nationwide network of Estonian Post will ensure that the information materials are delivered to all known mailboxes of private individuals. This is the most efficient way to reach the entire population of Estonia at the same time,” said Mr Jaan Vainult, Head of Postal Services Division at Estonian Post Ltd.

The information leaflet is in Estonian and Russian and provides an overview of the practical aspects of participating in the census. This year’s census is conducted in two stages – an e-census and an interview census. “In this leaflet, we have published the most important information about the census and the ways of participation, to help everyone choose the most suitable way for participating in the census,” added Potisepp.

The leaflet also includes a short overview of the census in English and a list of all the important dates as well as contact information.

The information leaflet is a part of the publicity campaign of the 2011 Population and Housing Census. The publicity campaign is carried out from early December until the end of March.

In Estonia, the Census will be carried out from 31 December this year until 31 March next year. The electronic Population and Housing Census or e-census, where the permanent residents of Estonia can fill in questionnaires on the Internet, will take place during the first month (31.12.2011–31.01.2012). Those who do not participate in the e-census will be visited by an enumerator in the period of 16.02 to 31.03.2012.

In 2011, the Population Census will be conducted for the eleventh time in the territory of Estonia. Previous censuses were carried out in 1881, 1897, 1922, 1934, 1941, 1959, 1970, 1979, 1989 and 2000.
