Overview

The chapter provides a selection of comparative statistics on the regions of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which correspond to the European Union’s statistical classification (NUTS) level 3.

According to the statistical classification NUTS 3 the regions are the only statistical units in Estonia and in Latvia. In Lithuania the borders of regions are the same as of counties (apskritis).

The regions of Estonia are defined by the following groups of counties:

Northern Estonia (Põhja-Eesti) — Harju county;
Central Estonia (Kesk-Eesti) — Järva, Lääne-Viru, Rapla county;
Northeastern Estonia (Kirde-Eesti) — Ida-Viru county;
Western Estonia (Lääne-Eesti) — Hiiu, Lääne, Pärnu, Saare county;
Southern Estonia (Lõuna-Eesti) — Jõgeva, Põlva, Tartu, Valga, Viljandi, Võru county.

The division of Latvia into regions has been changed. Due to the territorial differences between the planned regions and the statistical regions, a necessity to introduce a unified regional division of the country arose. Since 1 May 2004 the regions of Latvia are defined by the following groups of districts and cities:

Rīga – Riga city;
Pierīga — Limbaži, Ogre, Riga and Tukums districts and Jūrmala city;
Vidzeme — Alūksne, Cēsis, Gulbene, Madona, Valka and Valmiera districts;
Kurzeme — Kuldīga, Liepāja, Saldus, Talsi and Ventspils districts, Liepāja and Ventspils cities;
Zemgale — Aizkraukle, Bauska, Dobele, Jēkabpils and Jelgava districts, Jelgava city;
Latgale — Balvi, Daugavpils, Krāslava, Ludza, Preiliand and Rēzekne districts, Daugavpils and Rēzekne cities.

The distribution of regions at NUTS level 3 in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is presented on the Thematic map 26.1.

Due to amendments made in the Personal Data Protection Act, the production of population statistics for Estonia was suspended in 2004. Therefore, the population statistics of the year is delaying.

In the field of population statistics the data on population, population sex and age distribution, population density and infant deaths have been presented.

Population density and structure are presented as at 1 January 2004. The area of Estonia without the part of Lake Peipsi that belongs to Estonia (1,529.0 km2) and the area of Lake Võrtsjärv (266.2 km2), altogether 43,432.3 km2, serves as a basis for population density calculations. By the calculations of population density of Southern Estonia the area of Lake Võrtsjärv is excluded.

Labour market data — the number of labour force (the sum of employed and unemployed persons) and unemployed persons and unemployment rate are based on national labour force surveys. Unemployment rate in the regions of Baltic States is presented on the Thematic map 26.2.

In the field of statistics on social protection the data on old-age pensioners and their share in total population have been presented.

Data of construction statistics present the number of completed dwellings and floor area.

Regional gross domestic product measured as purchasing power standards has been calculated by Eurostat. Regional gross domestic product per inhabitant as purchasing power standards in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is presented on the Thematic map 26.3.

Agricultural statistics include data on field crops and livestock. The field crops and livestock of Estonia comprise from agricultural holdings and from agricultural household plots. The production of agricultural household plots is not divided by regions.

Traffic statistics include the number of registered passenger cars, buses and lorries, and the number of persons killed and injured in traffic accidents. Road safety in the regions of Baltic countries is presented on the Thematic map 26.4.

In the field of industry statistics the sales of industrial production and its share have been presented.

Due to rounding the total sums in tables do not always equal the total.

In this chapter the presented data have been received from the national statistical offices.
