Travelling is people’s need and way of communication. The reasons for which people travel have been the same for already thousands of years: religion and work, recreation and holiday. The elements of modern tourism could be observed already in the bathing areas in Old Egypt where the first hotels were established. Near trade roads accommodation and catering establishments were located; the vehicles of that time enabled only slow motion.

In May more tourists stayed in accommodation establishments than a year ago
According to Statistics Estonia, 274,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in May. There were 2% more foreign tourists and 9% more domestic tourists than in the same month of the previous year.
Feasibility study on the use of mobile positioning data for tourism statistics
Statistical institutes across the world are looking for ways to implement new data sources for the production of statistics, for calculating new indicators based on the data and for improving the quality of statistics. This article provides an overview of the results of an international consortium’s stuidy, which focused on the usage of mobile positioning data for tourism statistics. The article describes the options, conditions and legal aspects of data access, methodology and data quality, and presents the advantages and disadvantages as well as new possible uses of mobile positioning data.
In April, the number of tourists using the services of accommodation establishments increased
According to Statistics Estonia, more than 200,000 tourists used the services of accommodation establishments in April 2014. The number of foreign tourists increased by 11% and that of domestic tourists by 5% compared to April of the previous year.

According to Statistics Estonia, 194,000 tourists used the services of accommodation establishments in March 2014. The number of foreign tourists remained at the level of the previous year and there were 1% fewer domestic tourists.
In 2013, 6 million foreign visitors arrived in Estonia; of them, slightly less than one-half stayed in Estonia for more than one night. 68% of foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments. Among the tourists arriving from the largest tourism partner countries of Estonia, the tourists from Finland used the services of accommodation establishments the most – 70%; two-thirds of the tourists from Russia and slightly more than one-half of the tourists from Latvia stayed in accommodation establishments.
