Travelling is people’s need and way of communication. The reasons for which people travel have been the same for already thousands of years: religion and work, recreation and holiday. The elements of modern tourism could be observed already in the bathing areas in Old Egypt where the first hotels were established. Near trade roads accommodation and catering establishments were located; the vehicles of that time enabled only slow motion.

Travelling continues to be popular. In 2015, 1.2 billion foreign journeys lasting more than one day were made in the world while approximately 6 million foreign visitors came to Estonia. The article is based on statistical surveys and gives an overview of the expenditures of foreign tourists, their transport and accommodation possibilities in Estonia, the visitors’ countries of origin and the intensity of tourism.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the tourism high season in July, domestic and foreign tourists having stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments numbered 488,000, which was 6% more than in July 2015.

Travelling is popular all over the world and is not showing any signs of losing its popularity. In 2015, according to the preliminary data of the World Tourism Organization, the number of overnight foreign trips was at a record-high – 1.2 billion. The number is 4% bigger than in 2014. Foreign tourists travelling around the world made 50 million overnight trips more than in 2014. In European countries, there were 609 million overnight foreign trips, which is 5% more than a year earlier. The number of foreign tourists visiting European countries and staying overnight grew by 29 million year over year.
