Production of cereals increased year on year

The total area of utilised agricultural land did not change considerably in 2017. Production of field crops was higher than in the previous year, but a lot of production was not harvested. The number of pigs increased and the number of cattle also increased slightly. Less meat but more milk and eggs were produced than in the previous year.

The number of agricultural holdings continues to decrease

In 2013, it seemed that long-term rapid decrease in the number of agricultural holdings had stopped, but the initial results of the Farm Structure Survey 2016 indicate that the number of agricultural holdings has started to decline again in the past three years. Moreover, many holdings have re-organised their activities. This is due to the restrictions on the size of maintained permanent grassland, crisis in dairy production and African swine fever.

In 2015, the total production of cereals, meat and eggs was bigger and the production of milk smaller than a year earlier. The area of utilised agricultural land increased 2% compared to 2014. The area of land used for agricultural production and the area of land maintained in good agricultural and environmental condition also increased 2%. The area of land maintained in good agricultural and environmental condition made up 13% of the total utilised agricultural land in 2015. In 2015, field crops were grown on 614,000 hectares – on an area 1% bigger than in 2014.

In 2014, the production of cereals amounted to 1,221,000 tonnes in Estonia, i.e. 25% more than in the previous year. In the economic year which started on 1 July 2014 and ended on 30 June 2015 the share of imports in resources was 13% and that of exports – 49%. Wheat made up 28% of the total amount of imported cereals and 54% of all exported cereals.
