The first Population and Housing Census of re-independent Estonia was conducted from 31 March to 9 April 2000.
1,370,052 permanent residents were enumerated, 67.9% of them were Estonians. Compared to the results of the 1989 Population Census, the permanent population of Estonia had decreased by 195,600 persons or by 12.5%. The number of private households totalled 582,089 and the number of private dwellings – 617,399.
The results of the 2000 Population and Housing Census are available electronically in the Public Database as well as in paper publications. All the publications of the 2000 Population and Housing Census are also accessible on the website of Statistics Estonia. Statistics on the population, dwellings, dwelling houses and living conditions of the population have been provided for Estonia as a whole as well as for cities and rural municipalities.
