In the last 20 years, the share of people walking to work has fallen by nearly half. There is less use of public transport, while commuting by car has risen. Tea Vassiljeva, analyst at Statistics Estonia, looked at the data and examined how the commuting habits of Estonians have changed in recent decades.

The utilised agricultural area per holding in Estonia is one of the biggest in Europe
According to the Farm Structure Survey conducted by Statistics Estonia, the number of agricultural holdings in Estonia has decreased by 6%, i.e. by 700, in three years. According to Statistics Estonia, the volume of freight transport through ports fell by 31% in 2023. A total of 23 million tonnes of goods were transported through Estonian ports, 10 million tonnes less than a year earlier. Estonian railways carried a total of 10.1 million tonnes of freight last year, 43% less than in 2022.

Volume of industrial production down by 8.6% in January (Corrected on 08.03.24)
According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2024, the total production of industrial enterprises decreased by 8.6% at constant prices compared with January 2023. Among the three main sectors, output fell by 11.9% in manufacturing and remained almost the same in mining, falling by just 0.6%. In energy production, output increased by 15%.

In February, the consumer price index remained at the same level as in January
According to Statistics Estonia, in February, the consumer price index remained at the same level as in January 2024 and increased by 4.2% compared with February 2023. Goods were 2.7% and services 6.6% more expensive than in February last year.

In the last quarter of 2023, the average monthly gross wages were 1,904 euros
According to Statistics Estonia, in the fourth quarter of 2023, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 1,904 euros, which is 9.7% higher than in the same quarter the year before. In 2023 as a whole, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 1,832 euros, up by 11.3% compared with 2022. The median monthly gross wages were 1,578 euros in the fourth quarter of 2023 and 1,501 euros in 2023 overall.

According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2024, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 766 million euros. Compared with January 2023, turnover fell by 7% at constant prices.

The economy contracted by 3% last year
According to Statistics Estonia, in the fourth quarter of 2023, the gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by 2.7% compared with the same period of 2022. The GDP at current prices was 9.9 billion euros in the fourth quarter. In 2023 as a whole, Estonia’s GDP decreased by 3% and amounted to 37.7 billion euros at current prices.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2023, Estonian accommodation establishments served over 3.43 million tourists, which is 5% more than in 2022. The number of foreign tourists increased last year, while the number of domestic tourists decreased.
