The conference on demographic trends in the Baltic Sea countries begins today
On 12 and 13 November, the conference "Demographic Processes in the Baltic Sea Region in the 21st Century", organised by Statistics Estonia and the Estonian Statistical Society, takes place at the National Library of Estonia.
The theme of this year’s conference was inspired by the population and housing census that took place two years ago. Estonia and other European countries have published most of the census results, but the analysis of the results is still in progress. At the conference, all important demographic processes – birth rate, natural increase, family structure, immigration and emigration – are discussed from the contemporary perspective. This year’s conference has a wider scope than previous years’ conferences – demographic trends in Estonia are studied in the context of the Baltic Sea region.
For that reason, the conference is held in two languages. On the first day (12 November), the presentations are in English. The speakers include international guests as well as scholars and census experts from Estonia. On the second day (13 November), the conference continues with presentations in Estonian (in the Main Conference Hall). There is also a Baltic Seminar (in the Corner Hall) featuring European census experts and colleagues from the national statistical institutes of Latvia and Lithuania. The Baltic Seminar is in English. The topics include experiences of the latest census round, the lessons learned, and future plans in preparation for the next census round. The Baltic Seminar is also open to everyone.
For more than 20 years, the Estonian Statistical Society has organised annual conferences on topics that are important for the Estonian society. The conference serves as a meeting point for statistical scientists, statistics producers and anyone interested in statistics. It also presents recent findings, promotes analysis and discussion, and develops the statistical literacy of the residents of Estonia. Depending on the main theme, the Estonian Statistical Society has cooperated with universities, scientific associations and other institutions. This year, their main cooperation partner is Statistics Estonia, who is also the main organiser this time.
