Consumer price index up by 2.2% in July year on year
According to Statistics Estonia, in July, the consumer price index increased by 0.5% compared with June and by 2.2% compared with the same period in 2025. Goods were 1% and services 3.9% more expensive than in July last year.
Lauri Veski, the Consumer Price Statistics Service Manager at Statistics Estonia, explained that the year-on-year comparison again shows a relatively small rise in prices. “The last time the annual price increase was this small was in April 2021. Although the prices of housing, transport, and alcohol and tobacco have gone up over the year, the rise in the index is being held back by the cheaper prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages,” added Veski.
Housing-related prices were affected mainly by the price list changes that took effect in July. Due to the waste reform, the price of waste collection rose by 52.2% compared with June. Water supply became 6.6% more expensive over the month, driven by the price increase in Tallinn. Rent went up by 4%, while electricity became 4.1% cheaper. “Compared with July last year, however, electricity was still 13.9% more expensive, mainly because of the shortage of hydropower caused by the heatwaves. Piped gas has also become 26.2% more expensive over the year,” specified Veski.
Compared with June, petrol became 1.2% and diesel fuel 0.4% more expensive. Compared with July 2025, the price of petrol has risen by 6.2% and the price of diesel fuel by 12.8%, while international flights have become 11.4% cheaper.
Alcoholic beverages and tobacco became 6.4% more expensive over the year. “The excise duty rise of January 2026 should also be taken into account here. Food and non-alcoholic beverages, on the other hand, have become 1.6% cheaper over the year,” noted Veski.
Although the prices of food products rose by 0.4% month on month, over the year, prices decreased by 10.8% for fruits and nuts, by 3.1% for milk, dairy products and eggs, and by 3.8% for vegetables. Year on year, fish and fish products became 6.1% and soft drinks 4% more expensive.
