Consumer price index up by 4.2% in October
According to Statistics Estonia, in October, the consumer price index increased by 0.6% compared with September and by 4.2% compared with October 2025. Goods were 5% and services 3.2% more expensive than in October last year.
Lauri Veski, the Consumer Price Statistics Service Manager at Statistics Estonia, said that, in the summer months, the year-on-year increase in prices was the lowest of the last five years, but prices have shown faster year-on-year growth in September and October. “The rise in the consumer price index in October was influenced the most by the higher costs of transport and housing,” said Veski.
Compared with October 2025, transport prices were driven up by the 38.2% more expensive petrol and 59.7% more expensive diesel fuel. These prices have increased due to the ongoing armed conflict in the Middle East. Housing costs were primarily influenced by the rise in the prices of natural gas through networks (60.8%), wood fuel (12.6%), mixed municipal waste collection (56.6%) and electricity (3.7%).
Food prices were up by 0.7% in October year on year. This was mainly due to the increase in the prices of vegetables (8.5%), ready-made meals (3.2%), bread and bakery products (2.4%) and soft drinks (4.4%). On the other hand, prices decreased for butter (27.1%), yoghurt and other dairy products (5%) and fresh and frozen meat (3%).
The overall rise in prices year on year was slowed down by the lower prices of international flights and childcare services which were down by 31.6% and 29.2%, respectively. “In the case of childcare services, the main reason is the change in municipal kindergarten fees in Tallinn, which means that most families in Tallinn are exempt from paying the kindergarten fees,” explained Veski.
Fuel prices and housing costs were higher than in September
Compared with September, petrol prices were up by 2.7% and diesel fuel prices by 2% in October. Natural gas through networks was 11.2% more expensive; wood fuel cost 2% more and electricity 0.8% more.
In October, food prices were up by 0.6% compared with September. The main contributors were the higher prices of fruits and nuts (6%) and vegetables (1.2%). The prices of milk, dairy products and eggs were down by 0.8%.
