In May, the consumer price index rose by 0.1% compared with April
According to Statistics Estonia, in May, the consumer price index increased by 0.1% compared with April and by 4.5% compared with May 2024. Goods were 1.9% and services 8.8% more expensive than in May last year.
Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that the consumer price index in May was almost unchanged compared with April but rose by 4.5% year on year. “Compared with May 2024, the index was affected the most by the 7.1% higher prices of food products. In transport, prices increased by 6.2%, mainly due to the motor vehicle tax introduced in January and price changes in passenger transport. New price lists for health services are in force from April, including an increased appointment fee for specialist medical care, which also affected the index year on year (9.9%). A fall was registered only in the prices of clothing and footwear (4.5%),” explained Veski.
Compared with April, the index in May was primarily influenced by price increases of food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.6%) and restaurants and accommodation services (2.1%). On the other hand, the index was impacted by lower transport costs (1%) – mainly through the decreased prices of fuels and lubricants (2.3%) and passenger transport services (2.4%).
The prices of food products were up by 0.6% in May compared with April. Here, the main contributors were the higher prices of milk and dairy products (1.5%), chocolate (10.5%) and coffee (7.7%). Decreases in the prices of vegetables (0.9%), bread and bakery products (1,7%) and poultry (2.7%) had the opposite effect on the index.
In May, petrol was 1.8% and diesel fuel 3.6% cheaper than in April.
