The number of accommodated tourists decreased in March year on year

According to Statistics Estonia, accommodation establishments served 217,000 tourists in March 2025, which is 9% less than in the same month a year earlier. The number of foreign tourists declined by 7% and the number of domestic tourists by 11%.

Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that 108,000 foreign and 109,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in March 2025. “The number of foreign tourists was 7% lower than in March last year and it was also smaller compared with March 2019 (down by 13%),” explained Laurmaa. Similarly to the earlier months of this year, accommodation establishments served more domestic than foreign tourists in March.

The number of domestic tourists in March was 11% smaller than in the same month last year. Laurmaa added that the number of domestic tourists was at the same level as in March 2019 before the pandemic.

Nearly 36,000 tourists arrived from Finland, representing a third of all accommodated foreign tourists. Accommodation establishments hosted 24,000 tourists from Latvia (22%), over 5,000 tourists from Germany (5%), about 4,600 tourists from Lithuania (4%), over 4,100 tourists from the United Kingdom (4%), and 3,300 tourists from Sweden (3%). Year on year, there were 19% fewer accommodated tourists from neighbouring Finland, 3% fewer tourists from Latvia and 8% fewer visitors from the United Kingdom. Tourist arrivals from Germany and Sweden were higher than in March last year.

77% of the foreign tourists accommodated in March were on holiday and 18% were on business trips. 72% of the foreign tourists preferred to stay overnight in Harju county, followed by Pärnu (14%), Tartu (7%) and Ida-Viru (2%) counties. Lääne, Lääne-Viru, Saare, Valga and Võru counties each accommodated 1% of the foreign tourists.

In the case of accommodated domestic tourists, 72% were on holiday and 20% were on business trips. The biggest share of domestic tourists were accommodated in Harju county (34%), followed by Pärnu (13%), Tartu (12%) and Ida-Viru (11%) counties. Lääne, Lääne-Viru, Saare and Valga counties each accommodated 5% of the foreign tourists.

Tourists spent a total of 395,000 nights in accommodation establishments: foreign tourists stayed for 214,000 nights and domestic tourists for 181,000 nights in total.

In March, 905 accommodation establishments served visitors in Estonia. There were 21,000 rooms and nearly 49,000 bed places available for guests. The room occupancy rate was 37%. The average cost of a guest night was 45 euros per person, which is 7% more than in March 2024 and 25% more than in March 2019. The cost of an overnight stay per person was 51 euros in Lääne-Viru county, 48 euros in Harju county, 44 euros in Tartu county, 42 euros in Ida-Viru county, 42 euros in Lääne county, and 38 euros in Pärnu county.
