According to Statistics Estonia, in April 2022, Estonian accommodation establishments served nearly 236,000 tourists, which is 300% more than in April last year. The numbers of domestic tourists and foreign tourists* both increased.

Helga Laurmaa, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that over 105,000 foreign and more than 130,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia. “The number of foreign tourists came closer to the pre-pandemic level and was only a third smaller than that. The number of domestic tourists set a new record and was 23% above the pre-crisis level,” explained Laurmaa.

For 72% of domestic tourists, the purpose of their trip was holiday, and 22% were on business trips. The largest share of domestic tourists (32%) were accommodated in Harju county. 15% of domestic tourists stayed overnight in Pärnu county and 12% in Tartu county. . Ida-Viru county accommodated 10%, and Lääne-Viru and Saare counties each housed 6% of domestic tourists. Domestic tourists spent a total of 218,000 nights in accommodation establishments.

Compared to April 2021, there was an increase in the number of tourists from European countries as well as from countries outside of Europe. The very low reference base was still one of the reasons for the significant change. The biggest number of tourists came from Finland (nearly 46,000) and Latvia, (over 17,000). 4,000 tourists arrived from both Lithuania and Germany. 75% of the foreign tourists were accommodated in Harju county, followed by Pärnu (10%) and Tartu (7%) counties. Foreign tourists spent a total of 208,000 nights in Estonia.

In April, there were 922 accommodation establishments open for tourists in Estonia, which is 13 establishments more than last month. There were 20,000 rooms and 46,000 bed places available for guests. The room occupancy rate was 41%. The average cost of a guest night was 40 euros per person, which is 3 euros more than in March. The average cost of an overnight stay per person was 45 euros in Tartu county, 42 euros in Harju county, and 36 euros in Pärnu county.
