Since the first quarter of 2023, Statistics Estonia uses the data from the employment register of the Tax and Customs Board and the income and social tax declarations to publish the average wages and salaries. People working under employment contracts, the Civil Service Act*, and service contracts are included.

Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that 110,000 foreign and 120,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in February 2025. “The number of foreign tourists increased by 3% year on year and reached the level of February 2019. In 2021, Estonian residents made 575,000 outbound overnight trips, which is 3% more than the year before. The number of overnight domestic trips was nearly 2.3 million – this is 6% more than in 2020. Last year, the expenditures on outbound trips amounted to over 495 million euros and the expenditures on domestic trips to more than 402 million euros.

Piret Pukk, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that while Estonian residents have been travelling more in the post-pandemic years, they did less travelling in 2025. “Last year, the number of overnight domestic trips was still more than two times bigger than the number of outbound trips. Compared with 2024, the number of domestic trips decreased in each quarter. The number of outbound trips declined for three quarters and then started to rise again in the fourth quarter,” said Pukk, adding that this can be explained by the significant increase in charter flights, as shown by the data

Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that the consumer price index for the summer months exceeded the 5% mark every month compared with the previous year, reaching 6.1% in August. According to Veski, the last time the year-on-year change in the consumer price index was higher was in July 2023, when it stood at 6.4%. “Compared with August last year, the rise in the consumer price index was primarily driven by food prices, which were up by 9.2%. The places where people live have been recorded in one way or another for centuries. Previously, the place of registration could have been a church, municipality government, city address board, housing board or the Population Register. In recent decades, developed countries have found that register data are usually more accurate than survey data, and so population censuses have also begun to use them. Johanna Linda Pihlak, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that retail trade volume, which had grown by 7% in March year on year, did not grow as fast in April. “In April, the increase in the volume of retail trade turnover was influenced by enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel and by stores selling manufactured goods,” added Pihlak.
