Since the first quarter of 2023, Statistics Estonia uses the data from the employment register of the Tax and Customs Board and the income and social tax declarations to publish the average wages and salaries. People working under employment contracts, the Civil Service Act*, and service contracts are included.

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, on 1 January 2023, the population of Estonia was 1,357,739, which is 2% (25,943 persons) more than at the same time a year ago. In 2022, there were 11,588 births and 17,245 deaths in Estonia. Based on the data on registered migration, 42,022 persons immigrated to Estonia and 10,422 persons emigrated from Estonia. 75% (31,594) of the immigrants were from Ukraine.

In 2021, Estonian residents made 575,000 outbound overnight trips, which is 3% more than the year before. The number of overnight domestic trips was nearly 2.3 million – this is 6% more than in 2020. Last year, the expenditures on outbound trips amounted to over 495 million euros and the expenditures on domestic trips to more than 402 million euros.

On 21 December, Liina Osila started as the project manager for the Population and Housing Census at Statistics Estonia. She will be overseeing the organisation of the 2021 census.

Robert Müürsepp, team lead of national accounts at Statistics Estonia, noted that the economy, which has been falling for ten quarters in a row, is showing signs of improvement, but the biggest changes are still on the negative side. “Among the activities, construction had a strong negative impact on the economy, as did manufacturing. The biggest positive contributor after two years was again information and communication, where value added grew by 7.3%,” Müürsepp stated. The places where people live have been recorded in one way or another for centuries. Previously, the place of registration could have been a church, municipality government, city address board, housing board or the Population Register. In recent decades, developed countries have found that register data are usually more accurate than survey data, and so population censuses have also begun to use them. Back in 2011, eight European Union countries conducted the census on a register basis: in addition to the Nordic countries, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Slovenia.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the third quarter of 2022, the labour force participation rate was 73.7%, the employment rate was 69.5%, and the unemployment rate was 5.6%.
