From 16–18 June the expert group of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will be visiting Statistics Estonia in order to elaborate the report estimating the ability of Estonia to meet the statistical requirements for joining the OECD.

“The statistical requirements are one of the items that the country wishing to join the OECD should be able to meet”, the Director General of Statistics Estonia Priit Potisepp remarked before the visit. “In the course of compiling the report it has appeared that the official statistics of Estonia meets the requirements and there should not be any obstacles in joining the OECD,“ he added.

The statistical requirements specify the subject areas that must be covered with the official statistics and main economic indicators that the country has to publish regularly, as well as the conditions for the data quality and international comparability.

The expert group consists of four members and its leader is Tim Davis from the Statistics Directorate of the OECD. In addition to Statistics Estonia, the expert group will be meeting the representatives of the Bank of Estonia and of the Estonian Institute of Economic Research.

The expert group will submit the report compiled on Estonia to the OECD Statistical Committee for assessment. The conference of the statistical requirements of the Committee will be held in South Korea on 26 October.

In parallel with Estonia discussions about joining the OECD are held with Chile, Russia, Israel and Slovenia.
