In March, more tourists stayed in accommodation establishments than a year ago
According to Statistics Estonia, in March 2018, domestic and foreign tourists staying in accommodation establishments numbered 239,000, which is 5% more than in March 2017. The number of both domestic and foreign tourists increased.
133,000 foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, i.e. 5% more than in March 2017. In March, 92,000 tourists, or 69% of the foreign tourists arrived from Finland, Russia and Latvia. Compared to March of the previous year, the number of tourists arriving from Latvia and Russia increased 10% and 39%, respectively, while the number of tourists from Finland decreased 10%. There was also an increase in the number of tourists arriving from several European and Asian countries. 72% of the foreign tourists preferred to stay in the accommodation establishments of Tallinn. 8% of the foreign tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments of Pärnu city and 5% in Tartu city. 6% of the foreign tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments of Ida-Viru county.
107,000 domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, i.e. 5% more than in March 2017. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists increased 4%, which means that the duration of stay of domestic tourists in accommodation establishments decreased somewhat. 63% of the domestic tourists were on a holiday trip and 23% were on a business trip. 27% of the domestic tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments of Harju county, 17% in Pärnu county, 14% in Tartu county and 11% in Ida-Viru county.
In March, 957 accommodation establishments offered services for tourists. 20,000 rooms and 45,000 bed places were available for tourists. 40% of the rooms and 31% of the bed places were occupied. The average cost of a guest night was 35 euros, i.e. one euro more than in March 2017. The average cost of a guest night was 40 euros in Harju county, 34 euros in Tartu county and 29 euros in Pärnu county.
