Teams representing Estonia at the European Statistics Competition announced
Based on the results of the public choice competition, in the younger age group, Estonia will be represented at the European Statistics Competition by team Fresiito from Tallinn Secondary School of Science and team Mamika from Lüganuse School. In the older age group, due to the withdrawal of one of the teams, team Numbritaat from Viljandi Gymnasium and team Merkintä from Narva Pähklimäe Gymnasium moved directly to the European phase of the competition.

For a place in the European phase, the teams had to prepare a 2-minute video in English explaining a social topic that was currently most relevant to them. Three teams in the younger age group competed for two final places in the European phase in the public choice competition on 1 July to 10 July. The winner was team Fresiito from Tallinn Secondary School of Science with a video about Estonia’s carbon footprint. The second team to secure a place in the European phase was team Mamika from Lüganuse School with a video about Ida-Virumaa youth and the challenges they face compared to other European youth.
Under the guidance of the European Union statistical office Eurostat, the European Statistics Competition for students is organised in the academic year 2019/2020 in 17 European countries, with over 17,000 students participating. 139 teams with around 400 students registered for the Estonian phase of the competition. The winners of the European phase will be determined based on videos and will be announced on 7 September.
The objective of the European Statistics Competition is to promote interest in statistics among students and to encourage teachers to use new materials for teaching statistics. The competition shows the connection between statistics and everyday life as well the role of statistics in the society. The Estonian phase of the competition is organised by Statistics Estonia, the Ministry of Education and Research, Foundation Innove and the University of Tartu.
