This year, the theme of World Statistics Day, celebrated on 20 October 2020, is “Connecting the world with data we can trust”. Statistics Estonia invites everyone interested in data to a virtual statistics day event.

According to Mart Mägi, director general of Statistics Estonia, data help us in many areas; for example, to decide what to study in university, where to set up a business or which county is the best place to live. “Statistics Estonia offers reliable information on how Estonia is doing. The year 2020 has shown us that data are essential for making decisions that affect our lives,” added Mägi.

Statistics Estonia celebrates World Statistics Day on two days. On 16 October, there is a virtual statistics day event for youth. All 1419-year-olds are invited to explore the world of data and find out about the fascinating work of analysts. Among other topics, they will hear about the role of Statistics Estonia, the work of analysts, producing reliable data, Statistics Estonia’s web applications and how these can be used for school work. The day ends with a fun quiz.

The statistics day for adults takes place on the official World Statistics Day, 20 October. Andres Kukke, deputy director general for IT, will talk about World Statistics Day, the role of Statistics Estonia and modern statistics. The participants will also hear about Statistics Estonia’s useful web applications, which help to understand data.

World Statistics Day is organised every five years. It was first celebrated in 2010, with 130 participating countries. The celebration reminds us of the importance of data for making informed decisions and of the value of data literacy.
