The consumer price index rose by 6.1% year on year
According to Statistics Estonia, in August, the consumer price index increased by 1% compared with July and by 6.1% compared with August 2024. Goods were 4% and services 9.3% more expensive than in August last year.
Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that the consumer price index for the summer months exceeded the 5% mark every month compared with the previous year, reaching 6.1% in August. According to Veski, the last time the year-on-year change in the consumer price index was higher was in July 2023, when it stood at 6.4%. “Compared with August last year, the rise in the consumer price index was primarily driven by food prices, which were up by 9.2%. Coffee, chocolate, and fruits and berries saw the highest price increases,” Veski noted.
Compared with July this year, expenditure on housing rose by 4% in August, including rent by 3.7% and electricity by 13.2%. The rise in the price of electricity was caused by an increase in the exchange price. Petrol in August was 0.7% more expensive, while the price of diesel fuel fell by 1.9%. However, in comparison with last year's August, the prices of both petrol and diesel fuel were 3.7% and 3.5% lower, respectively. Clothing and footwear prices rose by 2.2% compared with July but fell by 1.8% year on year.
Food products were 0.6% more expensive in August than in July. Rising prices of fruits (2.3%) and milk, dairy products and eggs (0.7%), as well as poultry (2%) and chocolate (2.6%), for instance, contributed the most to the increase in food prices. Decreases in the prices of fresh vegetables (4.6%) and prepared meals (2.4%) had the opposite effect on the index.
