In February, the consumer price index rose by 1.4% (corrected on 7.03.2025)
According to Statistics Estonia, in February 2025, the consumer price index increased by 1.4% compared with January and by 5.3% compared with February 2024. Goods were 2% and services 10.6% more expensive than in February last year.
Instead of the 2024 weights, the 2023 weights were included in the table. Corrections are marked in red.
Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that exchange prices of electricity, motor vehicle tax and food products had the biggest impact on the consumer price index in February year on year. “Compared with February 2024, prices have increased across almost all categories of goods and services. Clothing and footwear are the only exception, as their prices were down by 1.3% year on year,” noted Veski.
Compared with January 2025, the index for February was driven up primarily by electricity prices as well as holiday trips, and food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Among food products, the biggest increase compared with January occurred in the prices of edible oils – up by 7.3%. Coffee was 4.6% and breakfast cereals 3.9% more expensive. Compared with the previous month, there was also a rise in the prices of ciders (5%) and tobacco products (3.2%), which is related to increased excise duties. Decreases were registered in the prices of fresh or chilled fish (7%), frozen fruits and berries (1.3%), and potatoes (1.3%).
In February 2025, petrol was 0.3% and diesel fuel 0.9% cheaper than in January.
As prices and the consumption patterns of the population continuously change, Statistics Estonia updates the weights system of the consumer price index and the representative goods every year. Starting from the January 2025 index, the base prices used for calculations are the prices of December 2024. To ensure comparability with previous periods, the consumer price index will continue to be published on the base 1997 = 100.
