The turnover of retail trade enterprises grew significantly in September

According to Statistics Estonia, in September 2021, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 791 million euros. Compared to September 2020, turnover increased by 17% at constant prices.

Jaanika Tiigiste, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the year-on-year growth in turnover had been 9% in August but accelerated in September. “The increased turnover in September was influenced the most by stores selling manufactured goods where turnover grew by 28% compared to September 2020,” added Tiigiste.

Among stores selling manufactured goods, the biggest increase at 49% was recorded in the turnover of stores selling via mail order or the internet. A higher than average increase was also recorded in the turnover of stores selling household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials (35%).

Compared to September 2020, turnover increased by 6% in grocery stores and by 7% in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel.

In September, compared to August this year, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased by 3%. According to the seasonally and working-day adjusted data, the increase was 6%.

In the first nine months of 2021, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased by 11% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The statistics are based on the VAT declaration data of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. Statistics Estonia performs the statistical activity “Financial statistics of trade enterprises (monthly)” for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in order to determine how the Estonian economy is doing.
