Evelin Puura, the foreign trade statistics team lead at Statistics Estonia, said that trade in August was affected by the continued decline in exports and imports in trade with European Union (EU) countries. “Compared with August 2023, exports to EU countries decreased by 3% and imports from EU countries by 8%. At the same time, extra-EU exports were up by 6%,” noted Puura. The main commodities exported in August were electrical equipment (16% of Estonia’s total exports), agricultural products and food preparations (11%), and wood and articles of wood (11%). According to Statistics Estonia, in September 2022, Estonia’s exports of goods increased by 14% and imports by 19% at current prices compared with September 2021. In the third quarter, exports were up by 16% and imports by 22%. Trade was mainly boosted by the increased exports and imports of mineral products as well as by rising prices in general.

The year end saw a change in the labour market

According to Statistics Estonia, the unemployment rate was 6.2%, the employment rate was 65.2% and the labour force participation rate was 69.4% in 2015. The unemployment level was significantly lower and the employment rate and labour force participation rate higher than in 2014. Compared to 2014, labour market indicators improved thanks to the results of the first three quarters, whereas in the 4th quarter the situation changed.
