The Estonian e-census starts tomorrow, December 28. All Estonian residents can participate in the census. To make sure that answering the census survey is as safe as possible, Liina Osila, project manager of the Population and Housing Census, goes over safety principles and shares useful tips.

In 2022, the average monthly gross wages and salaries in Estonian companies, institutions, and organisations were 1,685 euros, which is 8.9% more than in 2021. However, the average real wages decreased by 8.8% to 1,358 euros last year.

According to Statistics Estonia, in July, the consumer price index decreased by 0.6% compared with June 2023 and increased by 6.4% compared with July 2022. Goods were 8.1% and services 3.1% more expensive than in July last year.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2021, life expectancy at birth was 77.2 years in Estonia. Male life expectancy was 72.8 years and female life expectancy was 81.4 years. Life expectancy has decreased for both men and women. Men can expect to live disability-free for 54.9 years and women for 58 years.

According to Statistics Estonia, more than 481,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in July 2023, up by 1% from the same month a year earlier and 43% more than in June 2023. Compared with July last year, accommodation establishments hosted more foreign tourists and fewer domestic tourists.

Helle Bunder, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, pointed out that year-on-year growth in the output of the mining industry in September was mainly driven by peat production, while the increase in energy production was due to growth in electricity production. “In manufacturing, the volume of industrial production was down in slightly more than half of the manufacturing activities. Among the larger industries, output decreased by 11% in the manufacture of wood and by 13.5% in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers,” Bunder added. Census data show that 58% of the population was employed at the end of 2021, which is 6 percentage points more than 10 years ago. The increase is mainly due to persons of retirement age, but also slightly to the unemployed and students.

During the population and housing census, information on the highest level of education attained by inhabitants of Estonia was also gathered. Collected data revealed that the educational attainment of the population continues to rise. The level of education of foreigners living in here has also increased significantly. Below we will take a closer look at the educational attainment of the native Estonian- and Russian-speaking population as well as that of other mother tongue speakers and see how it has changed since the previous censuses.
