Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the number of accommodated tourists was still 6% lower than in September 2019. Robert Müürsepp, the national accounts team lead at Statistics Estonia, said that the fourth quarter marked the end of 10 quarters of recession. “The last time the GDP grew was in the first quarter of 2022,” Müürsepp noted. Jane Leppmets, a foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, noted that growth in foreign trade in services was most affected by travel services and other business services. “In the third quarter, exports of services to EU countries increased by 8% and imports from EU countries by 4%. Extra-EU exports of services were also up by 8%, however, extra-EU imports were down by 4%. According to Statistics Estonia, in 2023, the average expenditure of Estonian residents on overnight outbound trips was greater than in the period before the COVID-19 pandemic. The average spending on outbound trips has increased by 43% in the years 2018–2023. The number of tourists accommodated in Estonia has not yet reached the pre-pandemic level, but the share of domestic tourists has increased significantly compared with 2018.

According to Statistics Estonia, accommodation establishments served 507,600 tourists in July 2024, which is 5% more than in July last year. The number of foreign tourists increased, but the number of domestic tourists decreased in July.

According to Statistics Estonia and Eesti Pank, in the fourth quarter of 2023, Estonia’s exports of services grew by 5% and imports by 7% compared with the same quarter of 2022. Sales of services to non-residents totalled 3.1 billion euros and purchases of services from non-residents amounted to 2.3 billion euros at current prices. Total exports of services increased by 9% and imports by 8% last year.

In 2023, the number of outbound and domestic trips increased respectively by 40% and 20% compared with the year before. The main destinations of choice were Finland, Latvia, Italy and Turkey.

According to Statistics Estonia, accommodation establishments served over 384,000 tourists in June 2024, which is 14% more than in June last year. There were more domestic as well as foreign tourists accommodated.
