In 2017, the unemployment rate was 5.8%, the employment rate 67.5% and the labour force participation rate 71.6%. The labour force participation rate increased by 1.2 percentage points and the employment rate by 1.9 percentage points. The unemployment rate decreased by 1 percentage point. Employment and labour force participation remained high throughout 2017, reaching the highest levels in 20 years. The number of inactive persons continued to decline.

Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that foreign trade in services continues to grow steadily and reached a record level in 2024. “Exports of services were most affected by an increase in sales of telecommunications, computer and information services (up by €459 million) and imports by a rise in purchases of travel services (up by €134 million). Nevertheless, both negative and positive trends can be witnessed in all these spheres.

According to Statistics Estonia and Eesti Pank, in the fourth quarter of 2022, Estonia’s exports of services grew by 12% and imports by 25% at current prices compared with the fourth quarter in 2021. Services were sold to non-residents for a total of 3 billion and purchased for 2.2 billion euros. The balance of foreign trade in services was therefore in surplus by 765 million euros in the fourth quarter, which is 125 million euros less than in the same period a year earlier. In 2022 as a whole, exports of services grew by 31% and imports by 19%.
