Consumer price index fell in July
According to Statistics Estonia, in July, the consumer price index decreased by 0.6% compared with June 2023 and increased by 6.4% compared with July 2022. Goods were 8.1% and services 3.1% more expensive than in July last year.
Viktoria Trasanov, a team lead at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with July 2022, the consumer price index was influenced the most by the price increase of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which accounted for more than a half of the total rise. Compared with July last year, sugar was 59.3%, cocoa 38.7%, fresh fruits and berries 34.8%, sauces 33.0%, and confectionery 28.3% more expensive. Other edible oils were 15.6% and fresh fish 14.9% cheaper.
“An opposite effect on the index compared with July last year mainly came from the price decrease of motor fuel – petrol was 16.4% and diesel fuel 23.4% cheaper. The price of gas fell by 66.8%,” added Trasanov.
The last time that the change of the consumer price index compared with the same month of the previous year was smaller than 6.4% was in August 2021, when it was 5.0%.
Compared with June, the consumer price index was influenced the most by housing-related price changes, which accounted for more than 60% of the total index fall, mainly due to the price decrease of heat energy (5.6%) and gas (22.1%).
