Short-term labour market statistics, (2019–2020)

Coronavirus and the ensuing economic crisis have affected the labour market also in Estonia. Since April, Statistics Estonia is publishing short-term statistics on changes in the labour market. Interactive charts give an overview of the current labour market situation on the basis of weekly data from the employment register. The charts show weekly changes in the number of employment relationships: how many were started, suspended or terminated. According to Statistics Estonia, in the third quarter of 2020, the labour force participation rate was 71.8%, the employment rate was 66.3%, and the unemployment rate was 7.7%. There were 54,300 unemployed persons, which is 4,900 more than in the second quarter of the year.

The employment rate shows the share of employed persons in the working-age population. The data are collected with the Labour Force Survey. An employed person is someone who worked during the reference period and was paid as a wage earner, entrepreneur or freelancer. An employed person is also someone who worked without direct payment in a family enterprise or own farm, or was temporarily absent from work.

People prefer e-commerce while enterprises prefer cloud services

According to Statistics Estonia, 56.5% of the population aged 16–74 used e-commerce in the last three months. Compared to last year, the overall popularity of e-commerce has remained the same, but the amounts spent on purchasing goods and services have increased. The results of the enterprise survey showed that more than half of the companies using the internet use paid cloud services.
