Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2023, the average expenditure of Estonian residents on overnight outbound trips was greater than in the period before the COVID-19 pandemic. The average spending on outbound trips has increased by 43% in the years 2018–2023. The number of tourists accommodated in Estonia has not yet reached the pre-pandemic level, but the share of domestic tourists has increased significantly compared with 2018.

Retail trade volume down by 4% in May

According to Statistics Estonia, in May 2024, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 898 million euros. Compared with May 2023, the volume of retail trade turnover fell by 4%.

Tomorrow is the last day to complete the e-census

Today and tomorrow are the last days when it is still possible to participate in the Estonian e-census. All Estonian residents are invited to complete the survey. By today, January 21, more than 530,000 persons, i.e. 40% of the population, have been enumerated on the basis of the census e-questionnaire.

The places where people live have been recorded in one way or another for centuries. Previously, the place of registration could have been a church, municipality government, city address board, housing board or the Population Register. In recent decades, developed countries have found that register data are usually more accurate than survey data, and so population censuses have also begun to use them.
