Population increased but births continued to fall

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, on 1 January 2021, the population of Estonia was 1,329,460 persons, which is 480 persons more than at the same time a year ago. Population decreased by 2,590 persons due to negative natural increase and increased by 3,070 persons as a result of positive net migration.

Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that there was a marked decline in trade in goods in the first quarter of 2024, as exports were down by 16% and imports by 11%. “In the third quarter, imports were unchanged and there was a slight uptrend in exports. According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2019, milk production increased by 3% and meat production by 5%, while egg production was smaller than ever. Compared to 2018, the number of dairy cows, sheep and poultry decreased, while the number of pigs increased.

In March, fewer tourists than last year

According to Statistics Estonia, Estonian accommodation establishments served 51,000 tourists in March, which is a decrease of 43% compared to the same month of 2020. The numbers of both foreign and domestic tourists dropped.

The main rehearsal of the population census continues with phone interviews

In the population census online test survey, which started at the end of last year, Statistics Estonia received answers about 828 persons living at 410 addresses. Interviewers started working on 20 January and they will contact by phone the people who live at the addresses in the survey sample but who did not respond to the questionnaire online.

Exports of goods of Estonian origin decreased in June

According to Statistics Estonia, in June, Estonia’s exports of goods amounted to 1.6 billion and imports to 1.9 billion euros. Compared with June 2022, exports of goods decreased by 14% and imports by 13% at current prices. The trade deficit in June was 271 million euros, which is 33 million euros less than in the same month last year.

In January, the number of tourists fell by more than a half

According to Statistics Estonia, in January, Estonian accommodation establishments served 96,000 tourists who spent 184,000 nights in total. Compared to January 2020, the number of visitors fell by 57%.
