HICP flash estimate: prices up by 0.9% in April
According to the preliminary estimate of Statistics Estonia, in April, the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP), which includes the expenditures of tourists, increased by 0.9% compared with March. Compared with April last year, the HICP rose by 3.3%. This is a flash estimate which will be refined once more detailed data on April prices are received.
Retail trade volume up by 7% in March
According to Statistics Estonia, in March, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 975 million euros. Compared with March 2025, the volume of retail trade turnover increased by 7%. The increase in retail trade volume in March was mainly driven by enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel.
Statistics Estonia will start conducting business and consumer surveys
Starting from May 2026, Statistics Estonia will conduct business and consumer surveys, used to assess economic confidence among enterprises and consumers.
Lowest-ever gender pay gap recorded in Estonia last year
According to Statistics Estonia, in 2025, the gross hourly earnings of female employees were 12.2% smaller than the hourly earnings of male employees. The gender pay gap decreased by one percentage point year on year and was the narrowest ever.
Construction prices rose by 2% in the first quarter
According to Statistics Estonia, in the first quarter of 2026, the construction price index increased by 2% compared with the first quarter of 2025 and by 0.5% compared with the fourth quarter of last year. The rise in employees’ wages had the biggest impact on the construction price index in the first quarter.
1,360,745 people: Estonia’s population declined for the second year in a row
According to Statistics Estonia, on 1 January 2026, the population of Estonia stood at 1,360,745. This is 9,250 persons fewer than at the same time the year before. Estonia’s population decreased for the second year in a row. There were 9,240 births and 15,688 deaths last year. 15,212 persons immigrated to Estonia and 18,014 persons emigrated.
