“The duty of enumerators is to interview the inhabitants of their enumeration area and collect information about dwellings. This means that enumerators have to be ready for visiting people’s homes,” told Ms. Palmi Lindjärv, Human Resources Manager of the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011). “We are looking for a total number of 2,000 enumerators and 200 enumerators on-call time,” she added.

The job competition for enumerators will be open for candidates until 3 November and employment will start with a thorough training program on 6 February. Enumerators will start their work of interviewing across Estonia on 16 February. The working time of enumerators is from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00 p.m. on a daily basis depending on the respective agreement reached with persons to be interviewed.

The enumerator should have good communication skills, be computer-literate, have knowledge of the Estonian language and depending on the enumeration area also knowledge of the Russian and English languages, be at least 18 years of age and have at least basic education. “In this Population Census, computer skills are extremely important for enumerators, because the Census questionnaire will be filled in on the laptop on site,” told Ms. Lindjärv. Those who do not participate in the e-census will be visited by enumerators during the period from 16 February to 31 March 2012.

In 2011 the Population Census will be conducted for the eleventh time in the territory of Estonia. Previous censuses were carried out in 1881, 1897, 1922, 1934, 1941, 1959, 1970, 1979, 1989 and 2000.
