Short-term labour market statistics, 2019–2020

Coronavirus and the ensuing economic crisis have affected the labour market also in Estonia. Since April, Statistics Estonia is publishing short-term statistics on changes in the labour market. Interactive charts give an overview of the current labour market situation on the basis of weekly data from the employment register. The charts show weekly changes in the number of employment relationships: how many were started, suspended or terminated. The time series starts from 6 January 2020, the beginning of the first full working week of the year. For comparison, the weekly data of 2019 have been included.

The chart shows the time series of changes in employment relationships. The number of employment relationships is based on entries in the employment register, i.e. persons who have several jobs are included several times.

The chart shows current, new and terminated employment relationships by type of contract.

Economic activity

The chart shows the relative percentage change in the number of employment relationships compared to the end of the first week of the year by economic activity. The figure shows whether there are more people involved in the economic activity (positive ratio), less people (negative ratio) or there has been no change compared to the beginning of the year (zero ratio). The indicator was calculated as follows:
(number of employment relationships on Sunday of current week – number of employment relationships on 5 January) / number of employment relationships on 5 January * 100%

The chart shows the change in the number of employment relationships compared to 2019. For both years, the relative change in the number of employment relationships compared to the previous week is shown.

The chart shows the change in employment relationships compared to the same week in 2019. On the left-hand chart, the change in the number of employment relationships has been expressed in absolute terms, and on the right-hand chart, as relative change. Positive figures indicate a higher number of employment relationships in 2020 compared to 2019.

County

The chart shows the total number of employment relationships in the county and its change compared to the beginning of the year as well as the dynamics of new and terminated employment relationships.

The map shows the relative percentage change in the number of employment relationships. The ratio was calculated as follows:
(number of employment relationships on Sunday of current week – number of employment relationships on Sunday of previous week) / number of employment relationships on Sunday of previous week * 100%

Number of employees in enterprises and turnover

The chart gives an overview of employment changes in 2020 in enterprises and organisations of different sizes. It shows the relative change in the number or employment relationships by the number of employees in the enterprise.

The chart shows the relative change in the number of employment relationships by turnover group of enterprises.

Why are employment relationships terminated?

The chart shows terminated employment relationships in 2020 by reason for termination.

Methodology

Data for short-term labour market statistics are obtained from the employment register of the Tax and Customs Board and Statistics Estonia’s business register for statistical purposes. The labour market indicators were chosen which were most likely to be affected by the emergency situation declared by the Government of the Republic on 12 March. The dataset does not include the employees of security authorities.

Data since the first full week of 2020 are compared to the data of the previous week and the respective calendar week in 2019. The dataset is updated once a week with the data entered in the employment register during the previous week. For this reason, previously submitted data may be adjusted (e.g. if data have been entered in the register retrospectively).

The data are entry-based (employment relationship based), not person-based. This means that a person who has several jobs appears in the data with several entries.

The indicators displayed on the charts have the following meanings:

  • new employment relationships – started during the week
  • terminated employment relationships – terminated during the week
  • suspended employment relationships – suspended during the week
  • number of employment relationships – number of employment relationships on Sunday of the respective week

The percentage change in the number of employment relationships compared to the previous week shows whether the number of employment relationships has increased (positive ratio), decreased (negative ratio) or stayed the same (zero ratio). The ratio was calculated as follows:
(number of employment relationships on Sunday of current week – number of employment relationships on Sunday of previous week) / number of employment relationships on Sunday of previous week * 100%
