“This is the second time that we are organising the data gem competition. Our goal is to find the most outstanding examples of data uses and interpretations and improve data literacy in the society,” said Jaana Tael, chairwoman of the evaluation committee and Head of Partnerships at Statistics Estonia. “We are inviting to the competition everyone who has highlighted the value of data through published papers or thoughtful visualisations.”

“When data have been used and analysed skillfully, it adds credibility and depth to important ideas and knowledge. This is crucial for navigating today’s vibrant information landscape: such data help everyone to make better decisions. Through the competition “Andmepärl”, we want to give a voice to well-interpreted data and recognise smart story tellers,” added Jaana Tael.

Participation and evaluation

The competition is open to individuals, groups, public institutions and enterprises whose data story or infographic was published in 2021. Works submitted to the competition are evaluated by an evaluation committee convened by Statistics Estonia, which includes representatives of Statistics Estonia and experts in the areas of economy, IT, applied research, graphic design and media. The work of the evaluation committee is chaired by Jaana Tael, the Head of Partnerships at Statistics Estonia. The evaluation committee chooses at most five best works in each category. The winners will be chosen by summing the marks given by the evaluation committee and the public vote.
