Number of e-commerce users increased again, enterprises start to use artificial intelligence

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2021, the biggest increase compared to the previous year occurred in people’s use of the internet for participating in online courses. The popularity of e-commerce also grew, with 62% of the population aged 16–74 having made online purchases. Among enterprises, the use of enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management software continues to increase. Enterprises are also trying out AI technologies.

Sigrid Saagpakk, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that a smart TV is the most common Internet of Things device in Estonia, used by 57% of internet users. “The second most popular group of devices includes smart watches, wireless headsets and GPS devices, which are used by over a half (53%) of the respondents. Internet-connected home audio systems and smart speakers are also fairly common (28%),” added Saagpakk. From 2025 onwards, Statistics Estonia will no longer update short-term labour market statistics. The publication of short-term labour market statistics was based on a commissioning contract and the contract expired in 2024. Interactive charts give an overview of the labour market in Estonia based on the data of the employment register. They show changes in the number of employment relationships: how many were started, suspended or terminated. There is also a time series of the changes in these indicators. The population figure shows how many people live in Estonia at the beginning of the year. The population includes Estonian citizens as well as foreign nationals and stateless persons residing in the country. A person is considered a resident if they have lived in Estonia for at least one year or intend to live here for at least one year.
In July, 13% more foreign tourists were accommodated than last year

According to Statistics Estonia, accommodation establishments served 507,600 tourists in July 2024, which is 5% more than in July last year. The number of foreign tourists increased, but the number of domestic tourists decreased in July.

Production volumes in manufacturing showed modest growth for the third month in a row

Helle Bunder, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the volume of manufacturing production showed a modest increase in each month of the first quarter. “Manufacturing, which had been in a slump since summer 2022, started to show the first signs of recovery in October and November last year. According to Statistics Estonia, in 2009 the average income of population decreased and the unemployment increased due to the economic crisis, but increased pensions and governmental benefits helped people to prevent the fall in poverty.
