Population and Housing Census main rehearsal starts at year end

On 30 December, Statistics Estonia starts a month-long test survey of the Population and Housing Census to check readiness for the big census. Around 2,000 persons are included in the main rehearsal of the population census.

Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, pointed out that unlike the balance of foreign trade in goods, the balance of foreign trade in services continues to show a surplus, which means that Estonian economic entities export significantly more services than they import. Economic entities include enterprises and non-profit entities, for instance, non-profit associations and state agencies. “In the second quarter, exports of services exceeded imports by €815 million. According to the data of the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011), 388,077 persons or 30% of Estonian residents suffered from some long-term illness or health problem. People with higher education suffer from long-term illnesses on average two times less than persons with basic or lower education.

Estonian people visited museums nearly 2.5 million times last year. A total of 157 museums were open for visitors in 2023. There were 95 expositions, 4 science centres, and 924 exhibitions.
Retail trade volume up by 3% in January

Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the turnover volume of retail trade enterprises was up by 1% in December year on year and grew even more in January. “The rise in retail trade volume in January was mainly due to stores selling manufactured goods, where turnover volume rose by 6% compared with January 2024,” explained Pihlak. The number of tourists continues to rise

According to Statistics Estonia, nearly 222,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in February 2023, which is 31% more than in February last year. The number of both domestic and foreign tourists increased.

Data from the register-based population and housing census of 2021 reveal that 72.5% of Estonia’s population is made up of native people, i.e. persons with at least one parent and grandparent born in Estonia. At the time of the previous census, the share of the native populace was 75.3%, which means that the proportion of natives in the population has decreased by 2.8 percentage points, while the share of the foreign-origin population who consider themselves ethnic Estonians has increased.
