For summer 2012 it will be clear how big the real population of Estonia is and the emigration trends from the country during the last decade, spoke Professor Ene-Margit Tiit today, on 4 February in the university of the dignified of the University of Tartu while introducing the 2011 Population and Housing Census.

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2022, the Estonian general government deficit was 1% and the debt level was 18% of the gross domestic product (GDP). At the end of last year, the total expenditures of the general government exceeded revenues by 335 million euros.

Sigrid Saagpakk, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the average monthly gross wages and salaries in 2024 were the highest in Tallinn (€2,325) and in Harju (€2,218) and Tartu (€1,995) counties. “Compared with 2023, the biggest increase in wages and salaries was seen in Hiiu (9.9%) and Ida-Viru (9.7%) counties. Wages and salaries rose by more than 6.5% in all Estonian counties,” the analyst stated. According to Statistics Estonia, 1,365,884 people live in Estonia as of 01.01.2023, which is 34,088 persons (2.6%) more than at the same time a year ago. In 2022, there were 11,646 births and 17,315 deaths in Estonia. 49,414 persons immigrated to Estonia and 9,657 persons emigrated from Estonia, therefore, immigration exceeded emigration fivefold.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2022, Estonian accommodation establishments served over 3 million tourists, which is 52% more than in 2021. There was a rise in the number of both foreign* and domestic tourists.

Estonian people visited museums nearly 2.5 million times last year. A total of 157 museums were open for visitors in 2023. There were 95 expositions, 4 science centres, and 924 exhibitions.

Statistics Estonia has announced a competition for engaging 15 district heads of the Census districts for the 2011 Population and Housing Census, which will start at the end of the year. District centres in nine cities all over Estonia will commence work in August; the deadline of applying for the post is 5 June.
