The subsistence minimum is the minimum amount of means of subsistence required to cover a person's daily needs. It serves as the absolute poverty threshold. Subsistence minimum is calculated taking into account food and dwelling expenditures and individual non-food expenditures. Subsistence minimum does not include expenditures on alcohol, tobacco products, package tours, the purchase of transport equipment and expenses in restaurants and hotels. According to the data of the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011), 388,077 persons or 30% of Estonian residents suffered from some long-term illness or health problem. According to Statistics Estonia, in August 2022, Estonian accommodation establishments served nearly 420,000 tourists, which is 23% more than in August last year. The number of foreign tourists* increased and the number of domestic tourists fell.

According to Statistics Estonia, 713.5 tonnes of pesticides by active substance were placed on the market in Estonia in 2023, which is a tenth less than in 2022 and less than in the four previous years as well. The majority of pesticides sold were again herbicides.

The rise in construction prices in the first quarter was curbed by the lower cost of materials

Ülo Paulus, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same period in 2024, the construction price index was primarily influenced by the 2.9% increase in employees’ wages, which accounted for 54% of the index change. “Compared with the fourth quarter of last year, labour force was 0.6% more expensive and the cost of using building machines rose by 0.3%, while the prices of building materials were down by 0.2%,” explained Paulus. The repair and reconstruction work price index decreased by 0.5% compared with the fourth quarter of 2024
