HICP flash estimate: prices down by 0.5% in November

According to the preliminary estimate of Statistics Estonia, in November 2025, the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP), which includes the expenditures of tourists, decreased by 0.5% compared with October. Compared with November last year, the HICP rose by 4.7%. This is a flash estimate, which will be refined once more detailed data on November prices are received.

The decrease of the average monthly gross wages and salaries continued also at the end of the year

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 4th quarter of 2009, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 12,259 kroons and the hourly gross wages and salaries were 74.25 kroons. Compared to the 4th quarter of 2008, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were by 6.5% lower and the average hourly gross wages and salaries were by 6.7% lower.

Producer price indices in January

According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2010 the percentage change in the producer price index was 0.4% compared to December 2009 and -0.7% compared to January 2009.

5497 persons participated in the e-census of the pilot Census of PHC 2011

According to Statistics Estonia, at midnight the e-census of the pilot Census of PHC 2011 came to an end. In the course of e-census, 5497 persons were enumerated via Internet. In March the pilot Census will be continued with face-to-face interviews, when the interviewers of Statistics Estonia visit the inhabitants who did not participate in e-census.

Over 3800 persons have participated in the pilot Census of PHC 2011

According to Statistics Estonia, the first stage of the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011), when the people can enumerate themselves on the web, will end on Sunday. Since 5 March the enumerators of Statistics Estonia will be visiting those inhabitants of the regions of the pilot Census who did not participate in e-census or who did not complete the questionnaire.

The end of the year brought positive changes on the real estate market

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2009, 26,550 purchase-sale transactions of real estate with the total value of 18 billion kroons were notarised. If in the three first quarters of the year the number of purchase-sale transactions was smaller compared to the corresponding quarters of 2008, then in the 4th quarter a growth took place.

Long-term unemployment is increasing

According to Statistics Estonia, the unemployment rate rose to 15.5% in the 4th quarter of 2009, the annual average unemployment rate was 13.8%. Almost one third of the unemployed have been unemployed for a year or more.

Decline in the economy decelerated in the 4th quarter

According to Statistics Estonia, by flash estimates, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Estonia decreased by 9.4% in Estonia in the 4th quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter in the previous year.

Last year the number of tourists in accommodation establishments decreased

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2009, 2.1 million foreign and domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments. Compared to the previous year, the number of tourists decreased by a tenth.

Last year Estonia’s trade deficit was the smallest during the last 15 years

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2009 exports of goods from Estonia amounted to 101.3 billion kroons at current prices and imports to Estonia made up 114.2 billion kroons. The foreign trade deficit amounted to 12.9 billion kroons, which was smaller last in 1995.

Consumer price index in January

According to Statistics Estonia, the consumer price index decreased 0.7% in January 2010 compared to January of the previous year and increased 0.4% compared to December.

In December the decrease in retail sales slowed down to some extent

According to Statistics Estonia, in December 2009 compared to December of the previous year the retail sales of goods of retail trade enterprises decreased 15% at constant prices. The decline in retail sales which had stood within the limits of 17% during the previous months slowed down to some extent in December.

2009 was hard for Estonian industry

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2009 compared to the previous year, the production of industrial enterprises decreased 26%.
