Coronavirus and the ensuing economic crisis have affected the labour market also in Estonia. Since April, Statistics Estonia is publishing short-term statistics on changes in the labour market. Interactive charts give an overview of the current labour market situation on the basis of weekly data from the employment register. The charts show weekly changes in the number of employment relationships: how many were started, suspended or terminated. According to Statistics Estonia, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Estonia grew 4.2% in the 3rd quarter of 2019 compared to the same period of the previous year. The Estonian GDP was 7 billion euros at current prices.

Today, on 31 March, Statistics Estonia holds a meeting with the representatives of chief and authorised processors of registers and databases. The participants will discuss how well the registers are prepared for the register-based population and housing census in 2020/2021.

29% of people in Estonia are estimated to be affiliated with a religion. This figure has remained unchanged over the last three population censuses. However, the proportion of people who do not feel an affiliation to any religion has increased – from 54% in 2011 to 58% in 2021. The most prevalent religion in Estonia is Orthodox Christianity.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2019, there were 82,500 amateurs of folk culture in Estonia. 59,000 of them sang in choirs or danced in folk dance groups. The most folk culture amateurs per thousand inhabitants were in Võru county and the least in Ida-Viru county.

Today, a team from Statistics Estonia met with the census committee of the Estonian Government to present the questionnaire of the Population and Housing Census 2021 and discuss the current state of the project. The exact census methodology will be decided once the allocation of additional funds from the government reserves for 2021 and from the 2022 state budget has been confirmed.
