Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that, month on month, the overall rise in prices has been slowed down mainly by food products as their prices have fallen for two months in a row.
In October, food products were 1.2% cheaper than in September. The biggest impact came from the fall in the prices of bread and bakery products (4.8%), cheese (3.6%), fruits (2.1%) and fish and fish preparations (2.4%). Increases in the prices of butter (7%) and potatoes (4.2%) had the opposite effect on the index.
“Compared with September this year, prices in October were down in nearly half of the commodity groups,” explained Veski. Electricity was 3.1% more expensive than in the previous month. Petrol was 0.5% cheaper in October and diesel fuel 0.9% more expensive. The prices of clothing and footwear were down by 0.8% from September. Expenditure on housing was up by 0.9%, with expenditure on rent unchanged.
“Compared with October last year, clothing and footwear is the only major commodity group where prices have fallen, by 6.9%, while the prices of food products have risen by 6.3%,” said Veski about the rise in the consumer price index year on year. Among food products, the most significant year-on-year price increases were recorded for meat and meat products (7.7%), but also for milk, dairy products and eggs (9%), fruits (7.1%), and chocolate (34.3%). On the other hand, year on year, there were decreases in the prices of vegetables (3.6%) and sugar (13.2%).
